Small window air conditioner? I'm looking for a small air conditioner to fit in a small basement window. The window is around 13 inches high and 28 inches across, so the AC unit has to be less than that.
I saw a few of them, one being the Goldstar WG5005 which is 11.1 inches high by 17.3 inches across, but it got some pretty nasty reviews.
Any suggestions? marvin A replied: "they now sell air conditioners that you do not have to put n the window. They are called Portable Air Conditioners. you can roll them from room to room. They are equipped with flexible ducts at the back that you insert thru the window to vent out the hot air from the condenser portion. The newst thing in convenience. And at various prices so they are affordable.
Try Googling around under ''portable air conditioners'' for more information." What do i need to do to put a small window air conditioner in a wall slot? I have a in the wall slot for my A/C. The a/c in the slot is 24 inches wide, 20inches deep & 14.5 inches high..l i want to buy a window a/c for this slot but most window air conditioners are not that wide or deep. What can i buy or make to put the (small) window air conditioner in the wall slot. Ive seen the foam strips but they were kind of small. boredstiff8 replied: "well... air conditions come with side adjusters... so width dont matter... depth wont matter either... you just need to fill in the height..a piece of plywood you probably wont even have to screw the wood to the wall .. just wedge it between the top flange of the A/C... just make sure it is atleast a couple inches wider the 24""

Go to home depot and look at their scrap lumber. Have them cut a 2x4 scrap and a 1x4 scrap 14.5 inches and attach it to the side with liquid nails. After you install the ac just caulk around the edges." What size generator do you need to run a window air conditioner? What size generator, 1000 to 2000 watt, do you need to run a small window air conditioner, 5000 to 6500 btu? jedidoughboy replied: "measure the room, then go to a home depot or lowes, and they can help you get the size."
sdvond@sbcglobal.net replied: "Read the ID label on the air conditioner. It will tell you how much amperage it uses to operate. Get a generator with at least one and a half more amps rating. This will allow for the extra surge when the unit is starting up"
toddrf replied: "An air conditioner the size you're looking for is designed to operate on a 15A 120V circuit. That means it has a max draw of about 1800W. The startup surge can be higher, so I would get a generator at least 3000W."
Jim W replied: "Minimum size to run it for a period of time is at least 3 KW, larger is better. A generator should be run at 45-70% of full load rating. A 3KW will put out about 12.5 amps per leg, so it will full load one leg at 120 volt."
junaidi71 replied: "Forget about the BTU.
Read the AC Specification label, and see how many cooling watts this AC required, double this number and buy your generator with a greater number.
for example: if the AC cooling watts are 750 Watts, you need to buy a 1500 Watts or greater generator, the AC will use what it needs from watts."
kyaw rudy replied: "1 HP = 746 watts
1.5HP= 1120watts
if yours is 1hp 2000 watts will do
the amps will comsump 4.5amps to your baby" ANYONE KNOW WHO SELLS A ROOM AIR CONDITIONER THAT WILL FIT A REGULAR WINDOW WITH A MAXIMUM OF 10 INCH HIGTH? SMALL WINDOW AIR CONDITIONER NEEDED FOR 10 INCH HIGH WINDOW OPENING? Andy Nominous replied: "ANYONE KNOW IF THERE'S ENOUGH PEOPLE WHO USE CAPLOCKS ON THIS SITE?
Probably not."
lil j replied: "naw"
Runey replied: "Depending on where you live, the best place is probably is to search on , Otherwise, if you live by any universities, they usually have a surplus store that sells them. You can get these for around 20 dollars without a problem."
sunsfan1981 replied: "Try Home Depot or Lowe's. They sell low profile window air conditioners."
DoesntAfraidOfAnything replied: "OMG USE HAXX. THEY MAKE TEH BEST WINDOWS" How to install goldstar 5000btu window a/c unit? Whats procedure? What tools needed? I just bought this new small window air conditioner unit for my bedroom (2nd floor) from Home Depot, the sales person told me everything I needed was in the box. I am not sure whether I can Install this by myself? If so, what are the steps to install it? I dont know what kind of tools or materials I might need? Thanks for your help!! Irv S replied: "No tools needed.
The unit should have adjustable 'wings`
on the sides that open to fit the window.
There will also probably be some foam tape
to seal the opening around the unit.
(If this is not supplied, it's a good idea to get it.)
DO read the instructions. - In General:
Just unpack the unit. Lay it on the floor in front of the window. Open the window, and place the unit on the sill with the bottom bar in the notch of the sill.
Close the window down on the top of the unit.
Adjust the 'wings to close the sides of the opening.
(Here's where the tape comes in, some kits have a
top & bottom seal too).
Plug it in & start it up, you're done." Can I install an air conditioner in my fireplace? My apartment does not have a convenient window for a small window air conditioner. I have a fireplace and I was wondering if I built an adapter to seal the opening and support the air conditioner if there would be enough circulation in the chimney to get the heat out. I'd have to do something about the condensation too, I suppose. Does this sound like it would work?
After reviewing the responses I probably won't be doing this, but I'd like to contiue the discussion a little. Apparently the issue is the lack of cooler air to cool the condenser. As I described it, I'd be depending on the hot air rising in the chimney, while cooler outside air falls down the chimney at the same time. Instead of sealing the fireplace to the room, I could allow air from the room to replace the rising hot air in the chimney. This would be less efficient, but I think the portable units with the exhaust hoses must draw air from inside to cool the condenser also. I could even put a small exhaust fan in to draw additional air out of the room, again losing efficency. Am I crazy? Brian A replied: "Definitely not. The air will circulate little if any unless the chimney is extremely short. Actually I suppose there is a SMALL chance that it MAY work but it would likely be very inefficient."
mike b replied: "No this will not work. When you close off the fireplace opening you will prevent any air from entering the fireplace to cool the condenser.
The only way this would work is if you get one of those portable air conditioners and run the exhaust duct into the fireplace.
"
leecavcu replied: "If you are living in apartment, you probably share the chimney stack with other people. So unless you want smoke from your neighbors' fires, don't do it."
River Euphrates replied: "Probably not the best bet.
I would have talked this over with the landlord before renting the apartment.
Maybe they could get someone to cut a hole in the wall (carefully). Also make sure you have the correct rated plug and circuit for the a/c unit you are using." What is the law for renters in CA regarding air conditioning??? We live in a fairly large home and only have an evaporative cooler(which is a brand new unit, less than 3 months old). This does not cool down the house at all and it is always 95+ degrees in our house. We have bought two small window air conditioners, but then we are confined to that small area (there are 5 of us with a 7month old). Does the landlord have to provide air that actully works to cool down the house? Or is what is provided okay?? We are all miserable, especially the baby!!!!
it is stated in the lease that air is provided, however, as stated, it doesn't work with a darn!!! Neddie replied: "sounds rough,, sorry"
jardin replied: "Here is a link to the California tenants handbook.
Here is one on tenant law.
I hope it helps."
ohioartist replied: "I'm sorry to say that the landlord is only required to provide you with air conditioning if it is specifically stated in the lease."
hhhthegame replied: "Yeah. I remember in an espiode of Fresh Prince, Will & Carlton were living in the guest house and refused to pay rent b/c the A.C. didn't work. Uncle Phil took them to court, the judge found that A.C. was considered a luxry and not grounds for witholding rent."
Debra K replied: "If you agreed to it in your lease, you're entitled to it. If not, get out the fans."
Angela B replied: "From what I am aware - though no directly in California - is that air conditioning is a condition added to your lease and there is generally no right of law for a tenant to demand such service. Even in Ontario, Canada, this is not required although many landlords do provide it as part of their benefits for tenants." |
